Silverstrand has successfully completed the Mountain View Drive Landslip Remediation project for Somerset Regional Council, restoring safety and stability to a local road. The project involved a comprehensive suite of engineering solutions, including soil nailing, shotcrete batter stabilisation, and the construction of a concrete beam and guardrail.
The project focused on stabilising an embankment compromised by a landslip. To achieve this, the team first cut back the slip material and constructed a stable working platform. This platform provided access for the installation of 11.3-meter soil nails, which were embedded into the natural rock to secure the embankment fill material beneath the existing road. Following the soil nailing, reinforced shotcrete was applied to provide long-term protection against further erosion. All works were completed to Transport and Main Roads (TMR) specifications, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.
Key Challenges for this Project
While this project delivered a robust and effective solution, our team faced several challenges along the way. Two key issues required innovative problem-solving:
-Weather Conditions: Inclement weather caused an obstacle. The temporary works design for the working platform mandated stringent inspections: fortnightly checks, plus additional inspections after any rain events exceeding 10mm in one hour or 20mm in a 24-hour period. Work on the platform was suspended until a geotechnical engineer completed an assessment and granted approval to recommence after these events. This required planning and close monitoring of weather conditions to minimise delays.
-Formwork Fix: The original temporary works design for the concrete beam formwork proposed bracing the top of the shutter back into the existing road. However, site investigations revealed this option was not feasible. The team quickly adapted, sourcing and deploying 1-tonne Kelley Blocks to provide the necessary anchorage for the braces, ensuring the safe and effective construction of the concrete beam.
This project underscores Silverstrand’s commitment to delivering exceptional infrastructure solutions, even when faced with complex challenges. By providing lasting stability and safety for Somerset Regional Council and the local community, Silverstrand continues to demonstrate its dedication to building stronger, safer communities.
